The Technology

Pro-level testing. In your local clinic.

Hawkin Dynamics force plates and 1080 Motion technology are used at the NFL, NBA and NHL combines and by professional, national and college teams. At iTOP, the same tools are part of care for every athlete we test.

Data-Driven. Athlete-Proven.

The same tools elite athletes use.

Top-level equipment and top-level care should not depend on a roster spot. We brought the testing used by professional and college programs into our clinics, so every athlete can use it.

Used at the top level

Hawkin force plates are used at the NFL Scouting Combine and the NBA Draft Combine. The NHL used the 1080 Sprint 2 at its 2026 Combine.

Rare in a local clinic

This is the same technology used by professional and college programs, and it is rarely found in a local physical therapy clinic.

Available to every athlete

High school, college, adult or lifelong athlete: if you are training for something, you test on the same equipment.

Hawkin Dynamics

Force plates. Every push, measured.

Lubbock & Colleyville

Two wireless plates you stand, jump and land on. Each plate measures the force under one foot about 1,000 times per second, so we see how each leg loads, pushes off and lands, not just how high you jumped.

What you’ll do

  • Countermovement jump (a quick dip, then jump)
  • Drop jump (step off a box, land, rebound)
  • Landing and single-leg jumps
  • Isometric mid-thigh pull (a maximal pull against a fixed bar)
  • Balance tests

What it tells us

  • Jump height and how quickly you produce it (RSI-modified)
  • Left vs. right differences when you load, push off and land
  • Peak force in the isometric pull
  • Changes from your own baseline, test after test

1080 Motion

1080 Quantum. Load and speed, controlled.

Lubbock

A motorized cable machine. Instead of weight plates, a motor sets the resistance and can control the speed of every rep. It can load you harder on the way down than on the way up, or hold a set speed while you push as hard as you can. The cable can be set horizontally, diagonally or vertically.

What you’ll do

  • Split squats, single-leg squats and lunges
  • Knee extension and flexion
  • Hip tests
  • Shoulder tests: scapular, rotator cuff and overhead press
  • Pressing, pulling and rotation

What it tells us

  • Force, speed and power on every rep
  • Each side compared with the other
  • Strength at a set speed (isokinetic)
  • How you handle a heavier lowering phase (eccentric)

1080 Motion

1080 Sprint. Speed you can measure.

Colleyville

A portable motorized unit with a line that clips to a belt or harness. It can resist you, like a sled with an exact load, or assist you slightly faster than you can run on your own. It times every split and records force and power.

What you’ll do

  • Resisted and assisted sprints
  • Accelerations and change of direction
  • Lateral and jump work
  • Shoulder tests: scapular, rotator cuff and overhead press

What it tells us

  • Time and speed at each split
  • Force and power through the run
  • How you accelerate and brake
  • Each side compared, and progress over time

A real 1080 Sprint results screen from a session at iTOP. Speed, braking and time are recorded on every run.

Shoulder tests (scapular, rotator cuff and overhead press) are measured for each arm on the 1080 Quantum in Lubbock and the 1080 Sprint in Colleyville.

What's Different

Measured, not eyeballed.

Common clinic tests rely on a trained eye, a tape measure and a stopwatch. They have their place, and we still use clinical tests. Measured testing adds numbers for each side that we can compare from one visit to the next.

What the Research Says

The science behind the numbers.

Published studies on the tools and the tests. These findings come from specific groups of athletes and patients. They are not iTOP results and not a guarantee.

  1. Force plates

    Hawkin plates match lab plates

When Hawkin plates were placed on top of in-ground laboratory force plates, the two systems agreed on every countermovement jump measure tested and on 16 of 18 drop jump measures. (Study co-funded by Hawkin Dynamics.)

Badby AJ, Mundy PD, Comfort P, Lake JP, McMahon JJ. Sensors. 2023;23(10):4820. doi.org/10.3390/s23104820

  2. 1080 Sprint

    Accurate, repeatable sprint timing

In 17 elite female handball players, 1080 Sprint split times matched a reference timing system within 0.01 seconds (apart from a fixed offset over the first 5 m), and repeat sprints varied by only about 1 to 2%.

    Rakovic E, Paulsen G, Helland C, Haugen T, Eriksrud O. J Strength Cond Res. 2022;36(8):2335–2338. doi.org/10.1519/JSC.0000000000003830

  3. Recovery

    Jumps show fatigue and freshness

A meta-analysis of 151 studies found countermovement jump measures can detect fatigue and the rebound after recovery, with average jump height more sensitive than a single best jump.

Claudino JG, Cronin J, Mezêncio B, et al. J Sci Med Sport. 2017;20(4):397–402. doi.org/10.1016/j.jsams.2016.08.011

  4. ACL

    Side-to-side gaps can linger

In a small study of elite ski racers about two years after ACL reconstruction, dual force plates showed larger left-right differences in jump push-off than in uninjured racers.

Jordan MJ, Aagaard P, Herzog W. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2015;25(3):e301–e309. doi.org/10.1111/sms.12314

  5. ACL

    Jump plus strength testing

In 118 male athletes after ACL reconstruction and 44 controls, single-leg jump testing combined with isokinetic strength testing told the two groups apart with 89% accuracy.

    O'Malley E, Richter C, King E, et al. J Athl Train. 2018;53(7):687–695. doi.org/10.4085/1062-6050-480-16

  6. Return to sport

    Criteria matter

In 106 patients in pivoting sports, 5.6% of those who passed return-to-sport criteria had a knee reinjury, compared with 38.2% of those who did not.

    Grindem H, Snyder-Mackler L, Moksnes H, Engebretsen L, Risberg MA. Br J Sports Med. 2016;50(13):804–808. doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2016-096031

FAQ

Technology Questions

No. The force plates and 1080 equipment are used by professional and college programs, and at iTOP they are available to every athlete we test: high school, college, adult and lifelong athletes.

The force plates measure the force you put into the ground when you jump, land or pull. The 1080 Quantum and 1080 Sprint use a motor to set resistance or assistance and measure force, speed and power while you lift, press or sprint.

Hawkin Dynamics force plates are at Lubbock and Colleyville. The 1080 Quantum is in Lubbock and the 1080 Sprint is in Colleyville. Shoulder tests (scapular, rotator cuff and overhead press) are done on the Quantum in Lubbock and the Sprint in Colleyville.

Yes. Irving offers clinical return-to-play testing, including testing-only sessions. For force plate and 1080 testing, Irving refers athletes to Lubbock or Colleyville.

Tests are chosen for where you are in your recovery and progress as you do. Your clinician decides what is appropriate, and medical clearance stays with your physician.

No. The list shows publicly reported users of Hawkin Dynamics and 1080 Motion technology, with a source for each. iTOP Recovery is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by these organizations or the equipment makers.
